David Dixon Does Bridal (At Last!)

David Dixon is known for his feminine eveningwear, which he’s been designing under his namesake label since 1995. While Dixon has dreamt up custom wedding confections in the past, the fall 2014 collections at World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto saw him introduce a sublime and romantic bridal collection under the name White Label. To celebrate its debut—the line is available exclusively at the just-opened Kleinfeld Bridal Boutique in Toronto’s Hudson’s Bay flagship—we asked the designer how White Label came to be.

Did you already have a relationship with Kleinfeld [the U.S. bridal salon featured on TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress], or did someone play matchmaker? Hudson’s Bay approached me in October 2013 asking if this was something of interest, and of course it was!

How did the process of designing a bridal collection differ from designing your namesake label? It was not as easy as I thought. I love designing dresses, it has always been my passion, but creating a dress for that “special occasion” required a deeper sensitivity to stylistically maintaining a timelessness and elegance, as well as getting into the romantic side of a bride’s brain. There was a pressure for the first collection to set a certain tone. I had to combine what I like with research on my current clientele, digging deeper into their way of living and dreaming.

Where did you draw inspiration for White Label? It was based on a few observations. The first being a modern approach with a sense of tradition to it. The second was research on gowns that I had done for family and friends, to which I found a common thread. The brides I designed for in the past were looking for something that made them feel special and modern, but approachable, and above all comfortable, both physically and emotionally. The third was colour choice—ivory was accented with a pink blush, inspired by my mother’s wedding suit in 1953.

Do you have any bridal icons? I do not have a personal favourite, but I do adore seeing a bride whose look is timeless and complete [from head to toe].

What’s the response been like so far? We began getting orders as soon as Kleinfeld opened in Toronto! I want to be providing dresses for brides for many years to come.
