Chanteuse and producer Jessy Lanza creates summery pop you wouldn’t necessarily expect from a native of hard-ass Hamilton, Ont. Her electro-R&B-influenced sound first killed on 2013’s Polaris-nominated debut, Pull My Hair Back; now, Lanza has finally gifted us with a long-awaited sumptuous sophomore album, Oh No (Hyperdub, May 13), co-produced once more by fellow Hamiltonian Jeremy Greenspan of lauded Canuck techno outfit Junior Boys. Anticipate feel-good vibes, courtesy of her sensuous lyrics and sparkling synths.
Must-Listen Tracks: “VV Violence” is a banger brimming with playful attitude; the sexy “Going Somewhere”—featuring Lanza’s slinky yelps of “I just wanna impress you”—makes for the perfect Netflix-and-chill soundtrack.
