FLARE Staff Picks: Song of the Summer Playlist

From Drake to Sia and even a throwback tune from JLo and Ja Rule, these are the songs you want to be streaming RN

We’ll get right to it: everyone knows that one of the most coveted titles in the music industry is Song of the Summer. Music journalists and media outlets of all stripes make their guesses in April and May (this year, everyone seemed to think Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” would be the winner), but it’s Billboard who typically gets the final say. But does the venerable music pub always get it right? We polled the FLARE staff about our summer sixteen songs: check out our Spotify playlist below for a killer mix of new and old!

“I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times)” ft. Young Thug & Popcaan – Jamie xx
“A clear outlier from his otherwise chillwave album, this song embodies everything I want my summer to be: long, hot, and full of surprises.” – Eden Debebe, fashion intern

“In Common” – Alicia Keys
“I haven’t liked an Alicia Keys song this much since 2009’s “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart”, which was slinky, downtempo, and without the vocal histrionics she’s know for. This new sexy slow jam is all of those things, plus it was produced and co-written by frequent Weeknd collaborator and fellow Canadian, Illangelo!” – Cameron Williamson, editor-in-chief

“Controlla” – Drake
“Controlla (and pretty much every Views song) on my bike-ride home every damn day. It’s simultaneously chill and dance-ready. I also love the casual “Find Your Love” lyrics throwback to Drake’s softest of soft days. Swoon.” – Caitlin Kenny, beauty editor

“I’m Real” (Murder Remix) ft. Ja Rule – Jennifer Lopez
“’Cause your girl is stuck in 2001 and I maintain that Ja Rule is a musical genius. Side note: JLo sports a velour tracksuit and gold hoops in the music vid, aka summer 16 on trend AF.” – Amanda Demeku, fashion intern

“Closer” ft. Halsey – The Chainsmokers
“Anything The Chainsmokers touch turns to song-of-the-summer gold; this is what I’ve been singing out the car window since it was warm enough to roll them down.” – Jessica Robinson, culture intern

“Into You” – Ariana Grande
“Confession: I imagine myself as a supermodel strutting down the runway every time I listen to this song. Let’s hope my mom doesn’t read this. *crosses fingers*” – Leo Tapel, designer

“Higher” – Carly Rae Jepsen
“Just as I thought the summer was about to end without a single. Damn. Bop. Carly Rae Jepson dropped an EP of some of her E•MO•TION rejects and saved both pop music and my life. “Higher” is the one track from the album that I’m probably gonna give a little too much repeat-action to in the last days of summer.” – Michael Li Preti, assistant art director

“Cheap Thrills” – Sia
“There’s zero subtlety when it comes to this track, and sure, it came out in the depths of chilly February, but the message is perfect for a summer night when the dance floor (real or living room-version) is calling my name.” – Andrea Miller, acting digital managing editor

“One Dance” ft. Kyla & Wizkid – Drake
“I NEED-A ONE DANCE!!!!” – Nancy Won, fashion editor

“Never Be Like You” feat. Kai – Flume
“I’ve been listening to this on repeat nonstop and honestly won’t be stopping anytime soon. I mean, between Flume’s production—simultaneously languid and sparkling—and Kai (a FLARE #60under30 honoree) and her real, honest lyrics, the tension in this song is exquisite.” – Jed Tallo, acting art director

“For What It’s Worth” feat. Angus & Julia Stone – Kygo
“This is one of my most-listened-to songs of the summer, and definitely my fave off Cloud Nine, Kygo’s newest album! It’s a great multipurpose jam.” – Marika Van Schepen, fashion intern

“Sound & Color” – Alabama Shakes
“This tune has carried me through long walks and even longer—jam-packed and AC-less—subway rides. It’s mellow, comforting and melodious.” – Meghan Collie, digital intern

“Since I’ve Been Loving You” – Led Zeppelin
“For me, this summer was all about throwing it way back—and there’s nothing wrong with a little Led Zeppelin.” – Maxim Caron, fashion intern
