#Bughead Is Totally the New Lonely Boy and Serena Van Der Woodsen—Here's Why

Sulky brunette dude plus beautiful blonde babe aren't the only similarities between Riverdale's Betty & Jughead and Gossip Girl's Serena & Dan

It’s the ten-year anniversary of Gossip Girl‘s premiere and we’re nearing the October 11 premiere of Riverdale season 2 (praise be), which got us thinking about the similarities between the two shows we love so dearly. Of course, by now you know that Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart, who play Jughead and Betty on the hit CW show Riverdale, are totally dating IRL. Fans are loving this life-imitates-art relationship, and Bughead is a super cute couple—but has no one else noticed the similarities between this hot blonde babe and tortured brooding dude couple and one from our *other* favourite CW show? History repeats itself, y’all. Let’s look at the ways these couples are, like, exactly the same.

Blake Lively and Penn Badgley were a real life thing, and so are #Bughead!

Nothing compares to the high of seeing paparazzi pictures of the fictional couple you ship getting green juice together in their off hours… unless of course they’re already posting Instagram pictures of each other themselves. Blake and Penn were notoriously private about their relationship, whereas Lili Reinhardt and Cole Sprouse are more millennial chill about it. Let’s just hope Lili and Cole’s relationship lasts longer than Blake and Lonely Boy’s—although you gotta admit, it’s fun to guess who would eventually be Lili’s Ryan Reynolds.

Betty and Serena’s families are both, shall we say, complicated?

Both Serena’s mom, Lily Van Der Woodsen, and Betty’s mom, Alice Cooper, are tied for “least helpful mom of the year” award. Lily tried to brush Eric’s suicide attempt and sexuality under the rug, while Mrs. Cooper sent her unwed pregnant daughter Polly away to live in a group home. These moms clearly had issues, but at least Serena’s mom was #stylegoals, while Betty’s mom is the Cardigan Queen of the Northwest (not that Lily’s wardrobe could ever cancel out her terrible parenting, obvs). Both Betty and Serena are incredibly well-adjusted given their family drama, making them all the more desirable to Jughead and Dan. Why? Because…

Dan and Jughead are both emo AF… and they know it

There’s a reason Dan was called Lonely Boy! Despite living in an awesome loft in some made-up part of Brooklyn (was it Dumbo? Williamsburg? Scientists may never know) with his hot, nice dad, Dan was always pining after Serena and the seemingly unreachable world she inhabited: the Upper East Side social scene. Jughead’s life is similarly “sad”: he’s a teen living solo in an old drive-in movie theatre, and he’s always playing second fiddle to musically gifted, football-playing, teacher-macking Archie. Despite these hardships, both guys end up with a blonde Babe-raham Lincoln of their own, so buck up, fellow Debbie Downers… one day, this could be you.

Jughead is the narrator of Riverdale and—SPOILER ALERT IF YOU NEVER WATCHED GG—Dan Humphrey was Gossip Girl all along

In the most amazing twist ever seen on television, it turned out that Dan Humphrey was Gossip Girl the whole time—yes, even in scenes where he was physically with Serena or Blair and supposedly also updating his blog about them! We don’t know if Jughead’s moody voiceover narration/novel writing is indicative of any major plot point or shocking twist yet, but here’s hoping.
