Dropping out of university to enrol in beauty school might sound like the kind of quarter-life confusion that nightmares are made of, but Rita Remark knew it was something she had to do. “I spent more time doing my friends’ makeup and nails than working on my thesis,” recalls the former Ryerson University new media student. Her specialty? Blue-to-purple ombré eyeshadow (hey, it was the mid-oughts). After making the switch, Remark found herself obsessing over manicures more than maquillage and started detailing digits at local nail salons. She built a reputation for simple, high-impact designs—right at the cusp of the nail-art boom. It wasn’t long before Essie was tipped off: the polish powerhouse was looking for a Canadian lead artist, and Remark’s colour-blocking handiwork was the perfect fit. She soon started creating looks for Toronto Fashion Week and assisting backstage in New York. Almost four years later, Remark is the mastermind behind some of New York Fashion Week’s coolest manis (including those at Wes Gordon and Yigal Azrouël’s fall 2015 presentations). Never one to phone it in, the ever-cheery artist always shows up to set with pages and pages of ideas, meticulously labelled and sketched. “I have an album in my iPhone called ‘nail inspiration’ and another on my desktop. I’m constantly screenshotting things like desserts and tiles.”
