When Lilly Singh posted her first YouTube video, a spoken-word poem that got 70 views, she had no way of knowing it would eventually catapult her to online superstardom. “I was coming out of a pretty difficult time in my life, and I found that making other people laugh made me laugh,” says the Markham, Ont., resident. From that not-so-auspicious start, a career was launched. Now, she’s Superwoman, a bona fide YouTube celeb with more than five million subscribers and hundreds of millions of views. Her videos are quirky little skits that poke fun at real life, covering anything from menstruation (“It’s like a game of God of War down there”) to racism. The much-viewed “How Girls Get Ready …” follows Singh as she belts power ballads in the shower, takes countless selfies, YouTubes how to twerk and then lies about traffic when she’s inevitably late to meet her friends. Her fan base of mostly teen girls is fiercely devoted, and it’s easy to see why: Superwoman is hilarious and emphatically authentic. “If I have a pimple or a bad hair day, I point it out,” she says. “I think it’s OK to show people you’re a human being.”
