“I’m not somebody who was always a writer,” says Eliza Robertson on the phone from Norwich, England, where she’s currently pursuing her PhD in creative writing. Instead, she caught the literary bug after taking a writing workshop at the University of Victoria (she originally wanted to be a lawyer). Her first collection, Wallflowers, one of the 2013 Commonwealth Short Story Prize winners, reveals her chameleon-like ability to assume various literary styles and voices. One story is written in the manner of an etiquette manual, another is told backwards, yet another in the slangy-sweet voice of a Tom Waits–esque romantic who steals a tiger and two camels for his “one true love.” With a novel in progress, Robertson also has her eye on screenwriting: “I just haven’t had the time for it yet.”
