Superstar Teen Inventor / 17

Ann Makosinski’s Twitter bio might declare her “Flashlight Girl,” but the Victoria teen—who built a flashlight that runs on body heat—wants to be more than an inventor. Her real goal? Helping people. That was the motivation behind her flash of genius, inspired by a friend in the Philippines who failed a grade because she had no electricity and therefore no light for studying after dark. Makosinski’s invention has earned her major props, including a top prize at the Google Science Fair 2013 and an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. But her dream job has a pop-culture bent: “I’d love to be the next Bill Nye, but in female form.”
