“I moved to Edmonton for my husband, but we got married in Toronto, where I’m from,” says Julia Lipscombe, a 31-year-old features writer at the Edmonton Journal. “It was fun finding little ways to incorporate my new home into our nuptials—like having his suit made in Edmonton, as well as our custom bands by local goldsmith and designer Mark Katzeff.”

An escape from the preplanning craze: “The bartenders at North 53 take their time crafting classic cocktails in glassware that hearkens back to a different, more elegant time. You can order off the menu, or pick a spirit and the flavours you like and they’ll invent a drink for you. I’m drawn to the Aviation, with gin and a blue-purple violet liqueur. Definitely leave the car at home.”

Novelle Bridal Shop Edmonton Wedding

Guss-up central: “The all-glass space with super-high ceilings at Novelle Bridal Shop carries an exceptionally well-curated collection of gowns by designers like Kitty Chen, Paloma Blanca, Mikaella and Justin Alexander, plus bridesmaids’ frocks by Monique Lhuillier and lots of big-day bling.”

To say “I heart you”: “I hesitate to use the word ‘adorable,’ but Plum Home + Design really is. It carries lots of local wares, perfect for gifting bridesmaids—and fiancés. I got my husband a card by local hand-letterer Justine Ma that simply said, ‘Let’s grow old together.’ I thought it was pretty damn cute.”

Duchess Bake Shop Edmonton Wedding

For the-diet’s-over desserts: “Into lemon meringue pie? Try the cake version at Duchess Bake Shop. I’m also obsessed with the Duke: ultra-dense, ultra-rich layers of chocolate cake, ganache and salted caramel.”

For celebrating checking off everything on your to-do list: “We go to RGE RD when we want to dress up. This luxurious, farm-fresh resto in the heart of the city offers an ever-changing seasonal menu that’s Michelin star–worthy. The goose breast from Four Whistle Farm with squash polenta and kale is my winter main of choice.”
