5 New Fitness Apps to Inspire Your Spring Training

Class Pass
The popular fitness-class-booking platform has crossed the border. Now available in Toronto and Vancouver, Class Pass is ideal for those who like to mix it up. Just $99 a month buys you unlimited classes at one of 100 participating gyms and boutique studios in a range of disciplines, from dance cardio to hot yoga (for a limited time, the pass is available for $89 a month).

Class Pass’s deal isn’t without its complications, however. Conscientious consumers have noted that the deep discount means gyms and studios are taking a significant pay cut to stay competitive. The ethics of fitness consumption… It’s something to think about during your next savasana maybe. The app is currently available for iPhone only, but you can sign up for Class Pass here.

Cody
Train with real coaches and instructors via easy-to-follow videos (they range from two minutes to around 40 minutes), then post your comments on the workout and connect with other Cody users. Cody has a strong yoga focus, so it’s great for fans of the ancient practice in all of its 21st-century iterations. There are comprehensive body-weight and weight-lifting workouts offered, too. Beginners start with a free “Starter Training Pack.” Subsequent workout bundles (get 20 workouts for around $70) have to be purchased. Available on iTunes.

Interval Timer
Comprehensive isn’t always better, and not everyone wants to “connect” with other fitness fanatics. Sometimes a girl just wants the equivalent of a digital stopwatch with a long memory. Enter the Interval Timer app, the perfect accompaniment to High Intensity Interval Training–inspired (HIIT) workouts. The training method preferred by elite athletes, HIIT offers wicked results in half the time of an average workout (perform a solid minute of jump squats without stopping and you’ll soon understand why).

Interval Timer keeps time during a HIIT workout—counting off your periods of effort and rest—and even keeps a record of your workouts. There are no sample workouts, though, so if you’re new to HIIT training you’ll need to find some online. Available on iTunes.

Hot5 Fitness
Cardio addicts who want to start incorporating resistance and strength training into their routines will probably get the most out of Hot5 Fitness. The app consists of a vast array of five-minute targeted workout routines created and performed by the app’s professional trainers. Work your backside, core, arms, legs or abs, or work all of them using Hot5’s slick, easy-to-follow videos. Since the workouts are short, though, don’t expect them to entirely satisfy a craving for a full-on sweat session; use them to cap off a run or cycle or walk. Available on iTunes.

Burn This
If you’re the kind of person who needs the validation that comes from posting a picture of yourself in Lotus pose to actually perform Lotus pose, then Burn This is the app for you. Billing itself as a “the world’s most inspiring community of fitness and wellness lovers,” Burn This gives those who favour gym selfies a platform for indulging their vanity—er, hobby. The idea is that by posting pics of yourself working out and eating healthily you’ll actually do more of both. Here’s hoping that’s true. Available on iTunes.
