Founder of plus-size fashion destination in Toronto wants women to stop sacrificing style for size

Karen Ward grew up coveting the closet contents of her two older sisters. Like any pair of sisters, the two bounced blouses and blazers, denim and dresses back and forth, leaving Karen longing to get in on the exchange from the bedroom sidelines. She could never fit into the same clothes.

The struggle to find pieces that both fit and flattered her figure, while also satisfying her sartorial appetite, left Karen turning to better options online. Her discoveries led her to begin the blog Curvy Canadian, and have since inspired a project that went beyond her pant size.

This weekend saw the grand opening of Your Big Sister’s Closet (3126 Dundas St. W)—a plus-size fashion haven in Toronto that spills all of Karen’s style secrets. Carrying contemporary clothing from plus-size brands like Yoga Jeans, Cult of California and Esther Williams Swimwear (to name a few!), Karen hopes Your Big Sister’s Closet will inspire women sizes 12 and up to dress to their full potential, and break all curvy girl fashion “rules.”

Think shorts, sheers and stripes for spring, said Karen. “I will definitely be breaking the rule that women above a certain size shouldn’t wear: stripes!”
