Biko
Describe your spring collection in 140 characters or less.
Boldness vs. sleek simplicity, edge vs. femininity, gold vs. silver tones, and rock ’n’ roll glamour vs. a laid back bohemian sensibility.
What drew you to jewellery design?
It began as a passion alongside my studies in Ryerson’s New Media program. I quickly became obsessed with creating pieces, which my friends constantly stole to wear. I received rave reviews, giving me the confidence to take Biko full time upon graduation.
Where do you find inspiration? Do you have a muse?
My muse is Wolfie, my perfectly aged and gorgeous vintage Wolf model form, dated 1978. She is the true visual definition of “modern nostalgia,” which happens to be the Biko tag line. Found materials with a history also inspire me, and I strive to tell their stories in new and interesting ways.
Has social media made an impact on your business?
Social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, have helped connect me with other entrepreneurs, designers, and press, building and strengthening relationships with them. As well, the Biko blog has been instrumental in getting many behind-the-scenes thoughts and ideas out to customers and fans, who have given me great positive feedback.
What exciting projects do you have coming up?
The new Biko website and online store are launching on March 23rd! This will also be the big reveal of the company’s rebranding that has been ongoing for the past half year. Also, from March 30 to Apr 3, Biko will be showing at the One of a Kind Show.
