Vancouver Fashion Week: Top Five Designers To Watch

#vanfashionweek kicks off today! Here are the designers our Vancouver Localist-at-Large Cara McLeay is keeping an extra eye on

Elena Bobysheva
Inspired by geometry and structural design, Bobysheva combines textiles, using color blocking and precise tailoring to create striking yet feminine silhouettes. No fur, leather or exotic skins are used in her collections, and she focuses on sustainability using biodegradable packaging, green shipping and in-house dress making. In 2013 she received both the FDA Best Emerging Fashion Designers of American Certificate as well as the Driehaus Award for Fashion Excellence. A Vancouver Fashion Week debut.

Lee Reina
Blending London’s urban culture, ’90s hip hop, menswear and modern architecture, Lee Reina’s collection is a fresh take on the tomboy trend. Oversized fit and workwear-inspired garments make up this fun yet wearable collection. Another Vancouver Fashion Week debut.

Seafolly
With Gigi Hadid as the face of their campaign, it’s hard to miss this playfully bold Australian brand, which celebrates their 40-year anniversary in 2015. Graphic prints, bright colors and integrated textures make up the swimwear and ready to wear collection, continuing their run as one of the most recognized swimwear and beach lifestyle brands.

Matt Hui AW15 BLOSSOM OF LOVE #AW15 #womenswear #fashionweek #hongkong #lobdon #knitwear A photo posted by Matt Hui (@matthui_studio) on

Matt Hui
Focusing on bold, clean lines and high quality materials, Hui’s collections are sophisticated and strong. With a background studying at Pringle of Scotland, it is no surprise that he won the Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award in 2010 for his innovative work in knitwear, and received a scholarship at the Royal College of Art. He is most certainly one to watch!

Completing her first collection, a three-piece trouser suit, at age nine, Bellis’s collections are impressively tailored yet remain versatile and wearable, making her stand out from the crowd. A winner of the Benson & Hedges Young Designer Award in her native New Zealand, we look forward to seeing her elegant, well-made garments on the runway.

Vancouver Fashion Week runs until October 4.
