Matthew Gallagher’s show successfully brought a blissful, European summer to Toronto’s frigid downtown core. While there was no sign of his East Coast heritage, the lack of Canadian pride was made up for with a contemporary collection that was reminiscent of summers spent on the Italian Riviera. Peach and pink hues called to dying sunsets while sexy, flowing dresses bearing the chest and midriff alluded to the luxurious villa lifestyle. The collection was feminine and simple, with floral beading and pastel crop tops. But it was structural two-piece sets, like an embroidered jacket with a cinched waist and matching ruffled skirt that kept things interesting. With only 10 designs, many of which were draped backless gowns, Gallagher ensured sex appeal was never sacrificed. The downside? He’s given us all one more reason to dread winter.
