Urban Outfitters 'Kent State' sweatshirt
Sotally Tober is the kind of T-shirt slogan that will probably elicit a giggle or exasperated eye-roll. A seemingly bloodied sweatshirt that bears the words Kent State, however, is destined to make waves.
Last week, Urban Outfitters was slammed for offering up such a sweatshirt for sale. The backlash was immediate, with many taking issue at the idea that the company was somehow making light of a terrible incident at Kent State in 1970 in which four students were killed and nine wounded while peacefully protesting the Vietnam War. Urban Outfitters, an old hand at responding to such controversies, acted quickly, explaining they didn’t intend to cause offense—they said it was a faded wash and not an attempt to ‘bloody’ the tee—then took the shirt off the market.
