Nina Ricci square-frame sunglasses

First Lady Shades
No pair of sunglasses could be more iconic than those elegantly worn by Jackie O. Her mod frames inspired thousands of knock-offs, but now the original shades are back. This March Nina Ricci is re-launching those signature square-frame sunglasses. Our sartorial hearts may be warmed by current First Lady Michelle Obama’s wardrobe, but we’ll always have eyes for Jackie. Available exclusively at ILORI www.iloristyle.com in Toronto.

Samsonite Black Label

Samsonite Black Label

Carried Away
In the days before plastic baggies and discount airlines traveling was much more romantic. Plus the luggage was way more stylish – think hatboxes and monogrammed luggage sets. Thank goodness for Viktor & Rolf who for their new line of luggage for Samsonite Black Label looked back to the jet-set 50s for inspiration. We love the cute airplane print and reworked cosmetic cases. Time to toss the black canvas wheelie and get fashion forward at baggage claim.

Spanx

Spanx

Award-Winning Shape
There ain’t no carpet like an Oscars red carpet. So when Kate Winslet and Anne Hathaway stepped out in their gorgeous gowns they both had a secret weapon to ensure they looked their best: Spanx. That’s right, not a juice fast or a quickie workout, both of these svelte, gorgeous stars rely on shape wear such as the Slim Cognito Shaping Mid-Thigh Bodysuit ($90) seen here. Kate also wore hers for those two Golden Globe wins. A lucky charm perhaps? Look out for the new Haute Contour by Spanx line at your local Holt Renfrew this April. www.spanx.com

Super Powers
Don’t call it a comeback, they’ve been here for years. But the appearance of some of the original supermodels in major ad campaigns, and on the hottest runways, has us taking notice. Naomi and Claudia for YSL, Linda for Prada and now Jerry Hall (at the ripe age of 52) for Chanel. There’s no doubt that designers have a soft spot for supers of the past.

Swim Fan
If there’s one bathing suit worth your jaunts to the gym, this is it. Lingerie purveyor, The Lake & Stars, co-created by Vancouverite Maayan Zilberman and appropriately named after a Victorian euphemism for a woman’s skill in the boudoir, have launched their first swimwear line. Our favourite? The scandalously plunging one piece belted with an iridescent bow. www.thelakeandstars.com

DSquared2

Hot Shades
Bombshell, sexy starlet, glamazon are just a few thoughts that come to mind when watching a DSquared2 runway show. So it should come as no surprise that oversized, celeb-worthy sunglasses would join the mix. The Canadian designer twins debuted their first line of ’70s-inspired shades for Spring (in stores this May) and recruited supermodel divas Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista to front the sexy ad campaign. Summer just got a lot sexier. www.dsquared2.com

Barbie

Barbie

Barbie Dream Wardrobe
The girl with the feet for heels is celebrating her 50th birthday in style at New York Fashion Week. Fifty designers have been scouted to create one of a kind ensembles for the perennial fashionista which will be showcased on February 14th at Bryant Park. While we’re sure we’ll see plenty of pink on the runway, the fact that she will have her very own wardrobe tailored by the likes of Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein and Vera Wang has us downright envious. And her famous tootsies get outfitted in Christian Louboutin. Any career of her choice, legs that go on for days, and a boyfriend who always smiles? Barbie still has us dreaming.

Eye Candy
We love a good diffusion line, especially when there is homegrown talent in the mix. Toronto’s Candace Ang, known for her of-the-moment fabric bib necklaces and rosette covered headbands, has teamed up with Urban Outfitters for a lower priced line called SuperCandy. And they’re totally sweet.

Isaac Mizrahi

Isaac Mizrahi

Isaac in the City
Whether you saw Unzipped over and over, made road trips to Target for affordable chic, or just have a love affair with classic American fashion, Isaac Mizrahi has surely made an impact. I have experienced all three, so when Liz Claiborne recruited the designer to revamp their brand and threw a party in New York for the occasion there was no way I could turn down the invitation.

Upon checking in to the hotspot that is the Bryant Park Hotel, I left to make my way through the construction zone of white fashion week tents over to the Liz Claiborne headquarters on Broadway. A burly security guard escorts me up to the conference room after I find myself wandering the myriad floors of the historic space. Behind a row of security guards is the showroom where Isaac is setting up for the Fall presentation and party of the evening. Coincidentally, that room was the location of his very first job in the industry with Perry Ellis. Funny how things come full circle.

Liz Claiborne

Liz Claiborne

Dave McTague, executive VP of Liz Claiborne New York, leads an informal press conference where he tells us how Isaac was a student of Liz’s and feels a very emotional connection to her and the brand. You can tell this is a collection about heart and happiness, even from the team behind it. So down in the showroom we were eager to get up close and personal with the collection. Colourful tartan, wild leopard and bold hues packed the racks alongside great classic pieces like a cool trench and high waisted black trousers. The accessories are just as fabulous (too many lovely boots to recount) and with prices that skim the top end at $200, it’s hard not to love the personality that has been injected into the price range. And also difficult not to make personal shopping notes on the side.

Veronica Webb makes a quick visit along with her two young daughters, and the fact that she and so many other fashionable women in the room (multiple generations of fashion industry’s best) are sporting the line is a perfect reminder that this is not last year’s Liz Claiborne. Isaac is mingling about as a live jazz band plays, his hair in that signature Kramer-esque tousle. Shaking his hand it’s funny to see such a notoriously exuberant and outrageous man be bashful when taking compliments on the collection. But you like him instantaneously. And that makes me like the collection even more.

Jean Paul Gaultier 'Bubble' bottle

Jean Paul Gaultier ‘Bubble’ bottle

Haute Bubbles
Couture isn’t just for fantastic frocks, Evian water is now being dressed to the nines. Jean Paul Gaultier is this year’s bottle designer with his ‘Bubble’ bottle. Crafted by the House of Baccarat, only five of these bottles will be released and start touring at Berfdorf Goodman during New York Fashion Week. If ever there was a reason to toss those plastic bottles for good, I think we have our winner.

Confessions of a Shopaholic

Confessions of a Shopaholic at Le Chateau
Flare’s February cover girl Isla Fisher, star of the upcoming Confessions of a Shopaholic, told us how her character, the credit card-wielding Rebecca Bloomwood, inspired a bit of sartorial courage: “I was putting colours together brazenly, big fat belts.” With Patricia Field in charge of wardrobe, who wouldn’t be inspired?

Le Chateau has decided to put that into action. Partnering with the film studio, they put together three new looks inspired by outfits worn by the plucky Ms. Bloomwood. Her opening ensemble, complete with vivid shades of hot pink and purple, goes wearable with a black satin bomber ($99.95) to top the fuschia dress ($79.95). A patterned dress ($129.95) retains that madcap style with bright yellow accessories.

Want to style yourself a la Shopaholic? Log on to lechateau.com and enter for a chance to win a $250 gift card, a copy of the original best-selling book by Sophie Kinsella, and a ticket to see the movie opening February 13th.

Dame Viv’s Canadian Star
In the recent flurry of celebrity ad campaigns comes an awfully quirky pairing. Always one for intrigue, Vivienne Westwood has chosen Pamela Anderson to be the face of her Spring 2009 collection. The Canuck Baywatcher returns to the beach to show off her assets, and pledge allegiance to the Union Jack, in the new ads shot by Juergen Teller.
