Rarely do we see a bag sky rocket to must-have stardom overnight but The Cambridge Satchel Company has done just that. What began as a simple idea inspired by Harry Potter’s scholastic style has turned into one of the hottest bags of the season, if not the year.
Designed by Julie Deane, and her mother Freda Thomas, the UK-based family brand are just as surprised with their new found fame. The company, which is expected to be worth over $13 million this year alone, is repeatedly ranked as one of Urban Outfitters’ most sold accessory over the past few months.
What’s the appeal? Perhaps a throwback to simpler times when bags were less about bells and whistles and more about functionality. Take Proenza Schouler’s basic PS1–its focus is on function over fashion and has been a hit season after season.
Starting at only $128, this it-list bag is truly British through and through (honestly, it’s handmade in Britain). We expect to see many reinventions from the classic carryall in the seasons to come.
