On Saturday, April 24th, five new designers had the opportunity to showcase their collections at the annual TFI New Labels Runway Fashion Show & Gala. TFI has been supporting and grooming emerging design talent since 1987, so it’s safe to say they are well seasoned in spotting movers and shakers new to the Toronto design scene. All five designers had very distinct collections with one common denominator: a lot of black. The prize for Best Collection went to Anastasia Lomonova, who showed extraordinary pleated dresses on top of knit web-like bodysuits covering exposed skin, giving the collection a definitive edge. Although House of Groves was the official runner up, Paris Li also unveiled a stand-out collection of desirable well-fitting garments that included more then just your standard LBDs. Her versatile and sleek work consisted of great separates and my personal favorite, a charcoal dress with mink sleeves. With some wearable and unique pieces coming out of this show, it will be interesting to see what happens next for these new designers.
