As Canadian designers’ careers thrive, it’s not easy to keep them at home, but Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga is working to change that. Celebrity stylist Leslie Fremar (herself Canadian but based in NYC) has put together a pop-up shop called SQ1 Concept exclusively for homegrown talent: open for two weeks starting today, it features pieces from 11 womenswear and menswear designers, including Beaufille, Christopher Bates and Sid Neigum. rnrn“It’s a really hard business,” says Fremar. “But the advice I always give is: ‘Come home and be supportive of home whether you’re based here or not.’ Hopefully stores like this one will allow Canadian designers to stay here and be profitable.” We asked Fremar (whose first fashion job, btw, was an internship at FLARE!) to show us her five favourite pieces from SQ1.
