Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)
Though she's remembered as one of the most revered artists of the 20th century—and an enduring style icon, too—Frida Kahlo's life was fraught with hardship. Throughout chronic illness, miscarriages and her marriage, divorce and subsequent remarriage to fellow artist Diego Rivera, Frida expressed herself through painting, writing and bold personal style (she even graced the pages of Vogue and Vanity Fair). This summer, The New York Botanical Gardens hosts Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden, Life, an exploration of the botany that appears in her work. And in our own backyard, the Textile Museum of Canada presents Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray, with Traditional Mexican Costume, a collection of clothes, photos by Muray—Kahlo's lover of 10 years—and the couple's love letters. In honour of her July 6 birthday, we've rounded up the most striking Frida-worthy fashion of the season.
