Born in Quebec, shoe star Jerome C. Rousseau now resides in sun-kissed Los Angeles, where his spindly heels are a Hollywood stylist’s not-so-secret weapon. Take Twilight’s Kristen Stewart, who is rarely seen on the red carpet without a pair of his Nebula shoe boots. While ogling over his fall collection featuring denim-look leather pumps and quirky glitter brogues, we quizzed the delightful designer.
If you were to create a Jerome C. Rousseau fragrance, what would it smell like?
“Inspired by nature, possibly a dark floral or fruity potion, with tones that make the wearer feel strong, feminine and empowered. Wow, that sounds pretty cool!”
What is your ultimate summer getaway?
“Sweden and Norway–they’re wonderful places in the summer.”
When you are back in Canada, what is the first thing you like to do?
“Give my friends and family a big hug.”
What is a trend that you loathe?
“Ugg boots for the city (and for the summer!)”
What music are you currently listening to for inspiration?
“For the last few months, I have been obsessed with a French band from the late 70’s called Elli et Jacno. They are spectacular on many levels: music, lyrics, style, attitude. I also love the new Riviera F album at the moment, also Adam Heart, Bishi and Jens Lekman.”
What is the biggest compliment you’ve ever received about your work?
“My favourite comment was from a friend of mine who said she can’t stop putting on my shoes and dancing alone in her living room in front of her mirror.
Which designer would you love to collaborate with next on shoes for their collection?
“I did a collaboration a few seasons ago with Peter Pilotto in London. They’re amongst my favourite designers and I’d love to [work with them] again at some point. Other designers I’d like to collaborate with are Alexis Mabille and Sophia Kokosalaki.”
If you weren’t a cobbler, what would you be?
“I’d want to be a MTV presenter in the 80’s.”
