We were right! (Ok, well sorta!)
Last night at the state dinner in Washington, attended by Ryan Reynolds and wife Blake Lively (Oh, Canada!), Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau opted for another Lucian Matis gown, albeit, not the one we suggested below. But Canada’s new and greatest fashion ambassador did stun in a royal purple gown with pink beaded detail, which she paired with an Ela clutch and Dean Davidson ring. Jessica Mulroney was right, it was at once colourful and elegant.
Call it All Canadian, All the Time! Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and his wife, Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau (Chatelaine’s April 2016 cover star), are in Washington today to attend a state dinner this evening with the Obamas, and the glorious SGT chose to highlight Canadian design talent while making her rounds. Appearing this morning at a welcoming ceremony, the mother of three wore a dress from Lucian Matis’ spring collection, pairing the red and pink number with a red clutch from Aldo, drop earrings from Dean Davidson and a pair of pumps by Zvelle (all local, naturally!). Sidenote: Michelle Obama was also wearing Canadian, sporting a green dress by New York-based designer Tanya Taylor (not her first time!).
“Sophie and I both love colour,” Jessica Mulroney, Gregoire-Trudeau’s stylist and friend, tells FLARE about today’s looks. “She’s young and vibrant, so the look needed to reflect that. We also wanted to mix it up and include accessible fashion, like the Aldo bag. That is very important to Sophie.”
It’s clear promoting our nation’s clothing brands and labels is a high priority for Gregoire-Trudeau—the Canadian duo even brought scarves by Ottawa designer Krista Norris as gifts for Sasha and Malia Obama.
“Every look, from head-to-toe, is Canadian,” Mulroney adds about our first lady’s wardrobe. “We decided that from day one and never strayed. International media has already been contacting the designers and we hope that continues.”
Her gown for this evening is already steamed and ready to go (“Expect colour and a very elegant silhouette,” says Mulroney), but we still wanted to play dress-up for Gregoire. So here are some options from the Canadian runway that we think she would rock.

Chris Gelinas Fall 2016
If she wants Canadian, and straight off the runway, SGT should nab this CG gown by NYC-based, Ontario-raised designer Chris Gelinas.
