What is it about Parisian girls and their “who me?” insouciance that makes the rest of us swoon at the slightest hint of a French accent? I asked this very important question to Lola Rykiel who is the granddaughter of Sonia Rykiel, as well as the label’s US PR Director, and (most importantly) a legit French girl.
The secret: maintain a little mystery. "There is an effortlessness in the way French women look, whereas I think the North American woman embraces the effort,” says Rykiel. “A lot of beautiful Hollywood actresses talk absolutely openly about the fact that they’re high maintenance and take really good care of themselves, but the French have a shyness about that. They don’t want people to know that they take a long time to get ready. Of course their look is totally thought out but it’s not perfect. They want to have a mystery about it… a bit of smoke!”
Mystery, Shmystery. We got Lola to pull back the curtain and give us a peek at how a real French girl shops. Read on to see her fall shopping list from The Room at Hudson’s Bay.
