We interview a lot of designers and sometimes those designers say some pretty life-changing things. Case in point: Thom Browne, who stopped by The Room at Hudson’s Bay this week and dropped some seriously deep knowledge about life, fashion and being “not normal.” Read on for the real talk.

On why wardrobe staples have no place in a fashion show…
“I approach my shows from a pure conceptual, provocative point of view. People don’t need to see classic pieces on the runway; those things don’t change every season—but it is where the fantasy starts from. For me, the conceptual ideas are what make the classic pieces interesting.”

On being cool…
“In the world we live in, everything needs to be so cool, and I like to do things that are so not cool… which I think is actually more cool! There’s nothing more uncool than trying hard to be cool.”

On being liked…
“I would rather somebody really dislike what I do than just kind of like it. That would be really disappointing. Sometimes when I get universally good reviews, I think, “my gosh… what am I doing that everyone is liking?”

On why thinking is a good thing…
“I want to show people things they haven’t seen before and make them think with every collection. They can take parts of it—the fabrication, the story, the feeling—and decide how they want to wear it…or not wear it! The important thing is that they’re thinking about it.”

On being normal…
“I don’t like to do things “normally.” I’d rather do things that say something. Normal, for me, is somebody that wants to please everybody. I have no interest in that.”
