For true style leaders, fashion doesn’t stop at the front door. Your home décor should be a continuation of personal taste. Just ask Allegra Hicks, the Italian-born, London-based designer who oversees a lifestyle brand that encompasses ready-to-wear, beachwear, homewear and interiors aimed at the haute monde. She also recently released a book, An Eye For Design, which catalogs her many projects. We chatted with the refined style influencer just before she took off for Toronto, where Hicks is set to attend the Interior Design Show’s opening fête this Thursday.

Q: What will you be speaking about at the IDS11?
A: “We are going to do a chat about the relationship between the interior design world and the fashion world and how creativity links them together.”

Q: Which spring fashion trends will we be seeing in interior design?
A: “Strong colour. Purples, blues, periwinkles. But for interiors, I am personally feeling muted beige. I like the interior palette to somehow look like it has been there for a long time. I think that interiors shouldn’t be trendy. For me, what is really important is understated luxury. It’s about not screaming richness, but about being more understated. And that creates, somehow, the perfect background for one’s life.”

Q: What feels modern in décor now?
A: “I really love the juxtaposition of prints. What keeps an element of modernity is mixing things together and making them work. I have an 18th century sofa that I love to pair with a 19th century armchair and a new rug – and why not? Try putting different pieces together by recovering the furniture with fabrics that have a dialogue.”

Q: What is the easiest way to enliven your space on a budget?
A: “The one thing you should spend money on is a new rug. It is a fantastic canvas for anything you put on top and gives a completely different mood to your room. Or lighting, which is especially important for winter.”

Q: How do you organize your closet so that it’s pleasing and practical?
A: “By colour. I also love vintage and have many old dresses, so I keep my wardrobe fresh by deciding every year what things I want to keep in my closet and what I’d like to [move to storage]. I keep many catwalk pieces for my girls. When they are [in their twenties], they will appreciate them.”

Q: What is currently on your wish list?
A: “A banquette for my sitting room, a large piece of rose quartz, a silk-jersey kaftan and shoes by Cleo B. in London.”

Q: What is your favourite room in your home?
A: “I love my library – I spend a lot of time in there. And I love my bathroom. A beautiful bath is one of the most luxurious things in the world.”

Allegra Hicks will be speaking at IDS11 in Toronto on Saturday, January 29th at 4 p.m.
