The big day is almost here! As Pippa Middleton gets set to marry her beau, 41-year-old James Matthews, on May 20, she’s putting the final details in place for her fairytale nuptials.
The younger sister to the Duchess of Cambridge, Pippa, 33, stepped into the spotlight six years ago as bridesmaid to big sis Kate—and she nearly stole the show in her form-fitting ivory Alexander McQueen bridesmaid gown.
This time, however, all eyes will unequivocally be fixed on Pippa as she marries her own Prince Charming, a hedge-fund manager. Since the happy couple announced their engagement last July, fans have been speculating about all the details of the big day. While it won’t be the grand spectacle that was the royal wedding, Pippa’s nuptials, to be held at St. Mark’s Church in Englefield, Berkshire, are sure to draw international attention. And Pippa will make a beautiful bride.
But what will she wear?
We put that question to five Canadian designers, who dreamed up creations that would be ideal for the bride’s wedding day.
With more than 20 years of experience under his belt, decorated Canadian designer David Dixon knows how to make beautiful gowns for women. His work has appeared on stars like Meg Ryan, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Pamela Anderson and Catherine O’Hara.
For the beautiful bride-to-be, he imagines this structural gown that blends function with fantasy.
“I envision Pippa Middleton’s choice of gown to be modern, feminine and timeless,” says David. It’s a delicate and refined approach to modern bridalwear, which is a signature of the beloved designer’s esthetic.
“This dress—made up of layers of organza, beadwork and a clean silhouette—is the embodiment of the modern romantic, just like Pippa.”
Toronto designer and creative director Nikki Wirthensohn Yassemi has style in her blood. Her mother, Mitra, worked alongside British couturier Victor Edelstein, who created some of Princess Diana’s iconic gowns.
So the task of conjuring a regal and awe-inspiring wedding day gown came naturally to the Narces founder. “The sketch incorporates elements of Pippa’s style such as timelessness, and modesty, with a strong sense of elegance,” says Nikki.
“The Narces gown envisioned is a silk chiffon flowy gown with a plunging neckline, lightly embellished with dainty floral lace detailing.”The ethereal veil is the crowning accessory in the bridal look. “To match the dress, the veil flows and sparkles with fine romantic details,” she adds.
Whatever fashion statement she chooses to make on her big day, Pippa will be a radiant bride. And, says Nikki, “She will look beautiful and confident in her gown!”
For a lesson in femininity, look no further than Toronto-based fashion house Stephan Caras.
While sporty Pippa is known for her athletic pursuits—she’s a veteran of numerous charitable cycling and running events—she clearly embraces her feminine side. And that’s something designers Stephan and son Kyriako played to when creating their stunning sketch.
“For Pippa, we saw a true modern esthetic that accentuated with sleek lines and that is clean, elegant, and feminine,” Kyriako tells Hello! “Our design captures this by creating a slender silhouette and a gentle flare while maintaining the sleek line that we envision for Pippa.”
Clearly, this look is all about subtle yet beautiful details. Beaded floral lace adds to the elegance of the design with an appliqué that runs along the back, over the shoulder and along the neck.
“All these elements would give her length and visually extend her stature, which is fitting for the occasion,” he explains. The design is perfectly complemented with a full-length veil featuring a floral lace motif while the soft and flowing fabrics with blush undertones create movement and sleek lines give the illusion of length to the gown.
“It is an elegant, modern, feminine and timeless look for people to admire for years to come.”
Canadian designer Lucian Matis is a staple in the closets of the most stylish women in the country—think Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, Sarah Gadon and musician Nelly Furtado.
While his designs shine under the flashing camera-bulbs of the red carpet, his stunning creations similarly sparkle on glowing brides.
For Pippa, the Canadian designer imagined two breathtaking looks that fit her playful personality.
The High-Low Gown, (right) carries a princess-like air. “Inspired by porcelain figurines, I designed the gown to be in duchess satin to give the same sheen as in the dolls and then encrusted it with tonal crystals,” says Lucian.
“The box pleats are oversized to shrink her frame and make her appear more doll-like in proportions.” The classic bodice adds a touch of allure with modern beading.
His second look, the Guipure Lace Gown, infuses artistry and movement into its stunning architecture. “I was inspired by ocean waves and the patterns they create from an aerial view,” he says, “The train resembles crashing waves and creeps up into a Guipure lace, then into a French lace to create an illusion of lightness.”
INES DI SANTO
The glamorous and vintage-inspired creation Ines Di Santo imagines for modern bride Pippa fits perfectly with her sophisticated esthetic. “I like the idea of a classic, slightly form-fitting front that flows into the softest of ballgown backs,” says the designer, who was raised in Buenos Aires and now fashions elegant bridal gowns out of her atelier in Toronto.
The romantic vibe of this design would ensure that all eyes remain fixed on the bride as she heads down the aisle, her frothy train trailing close. The delicate structure of the dress perfectly accentu-
ates Pippa’s athletic figure. “Collaged lace sleeves and an invisible tulle back with buttons keep the gown fresh,” says Ines.
It’s a youthful fairytale look that could easily translate to the gowns worn by Pippa’s bridesmaids—including one prominent member of the bridal party who’s sure to capture hearts when she heads down the aisle ahead of her aunt.
Princess Charlotte, who will turn two just weeks before the big day, will be accompanying Pippa as she says “I do.” And the young royal is sure to be outfitted in a frothy and elegant ensemble that resembles the bride’s stellar confection.
A gown as striking and eye-catching as this would be enhanced with a subtle and fresh beauty look. For this, Pippa has enlisted pro makeup artist Hannah Martin, who helped her sister, Kate, prepare for her wedding in 2011. She will likely favour a minimal, pretty and polished look for Pippa. “The secret to perfect wedding-day makeup is to look like you but at your absolute best,” says Martin.
