Toronto: Smoky Eyes Get A Twist At Mark Fast

Pretty makeup gets an edgy twist

Backstage at the Mark Fast show, key makeup artist Melissa Gibson had a very specific description of the pretty yet edgy look she painted on models: “If Tilda Swinton played little Red Riding Hood.”

To give the classic black smoky eye a touch of edge, Gibson applied eye gloss to the top lid after powder, so that the makeup would spread, smear and crease. Lips got a similar twist with only a bit of burgundy stain painted along the inner edge, rather than a solid, stand-out pout.

Hair had a similar undone feel, which key hairstylist Marilisa Sears described as “melancholy pretty.” She started by using a curling iron to make perfect ringlets, but then misted the loops thoroughly with water and texturizing spray to deconstruct the look before pinning it into an intentionally imperfect updo.
