Designer Philip Sparks has developed a reputation for crisp, outdoorsy clothes that are coveted by the downtown Toronto crowd that packed his Fall 2011 presentation last night, opening the week of off-schedule shows that precedes Toronto Fashion Week.
Now in his second season of womenswear (his label began with menswear in 2007), Sparks’ Canadiana inspiration was most apparent in an oversized maple leaf print that found its way onto trio of pieces–a skirt, cap-sleeve blouse and cocktail dress.
A highlight of any Sparks collection is the outerwear and this season a forest green duffle, for both men and women, was the standout. Wooly mountain sheep appeared throughout, from the collar of a men’s military parka to a beehive hat atop a full-skirted skating dress.
On the indoor front there were his-and-hers tuxedos, a sweet little plaid shirtdress and plenty of cozy knits.
