Toronto Fashion Week: Steven Tai Fall 2013
After reviewing Steven Tai's Spring 2013 collection, we were excited to see what he had created for this season. What kind of scientific or "nerd"—as he so often refers to himself—approach would he take? The whole collection had an athletic feel to it—amazing oversized sports jackets, colour-blocked sweaters and low-top sneakers, with skiing as the theme. “I wanted to do something completely unexpected, but yet kind of geeky at the same time," shared Tai backstage at The ShOws.
He started off with the season’s biggest obsession: "the sweater." Tai made a version using silicone he created himself for several of the looks. He also manipulated the material to mimic the look of ribbing on a pair of trousers by pouring the self-made synthetic material over a pattern, then adding “jersey on top to give it the stretch of natural ribbing." The effect was a unique fabric with his desired nerd-jock aesthetic.
