New York Fashion Week: Prabal Gurung is fit for royalty

Photography by Anthea Simms

It’s too soon to call it a certified trend, but a few designers so far this week seem to be looking to the monarchy for their Fall 2011 inspiration. First at Jason Wu, and then at today’s Prabal Gurung show, I’ve seen some straight up royalty-worthy ready-to-wear. Dramatic blouses with flounce collars and darkly romantic dresses spell out opulence fit for Your Highness. Waistlines are either true and nipped or flowing from an empire line. There are touches of Givenchy in a cream marabou feathered tank that is reined in by a strappy leather harness. It isn’t all bondage details though: a soft pink embellished cocktail dress ended with a cascade of chiffon flowers in a sweetly sophisticated look. A final look brought the decadent rebellious royalty message in a soft pink gown with voluminous pink Mongolian wool coat that rippled with each step. Lots of red-carpet possibilities for the A-listers who love a dose of old-school glam.
