The Royal York Hotel played host last night kicking off Toronto Fashion week in a baroque ballroom. Models sauntered through the elegant space in intricate macramé dresses and separates hand crafted by Matis. The dark romantic feel continued to build with gothic undertones and croc details in an almost entirely black collection.
Oily green feather dresses with hints of fiery yellow added the only pops of bright colour, contrasting Matis’ kaleidoscopic Spring 2012 collection. Chunky knit and macramé dresses were an interesting take on the artisanal trend spotted on the international runways last season. Macramé fingerless gloves gave the sweet looks an edge while feather bunny ears added a touch of wimpy. The grand finale included over the top gowns of cascading tulle and an abundance of feathers. Unique beauty touches included black and acid yellow printed nails with thin feathers protruding from the ends.
One giant miss were the pasties on the models visible through the sheer and macramé pieces. They were highly distracting taking away from the elaborate looks Lucian worked so hard to create. Next time we would suggest simply going without or adding a lining might be best.
