The future looks bright – brightly tie-dyed, that is – for Toronto-based designer Ashley Rowe. Last night in the west end, the former Flare intern presented her spring 2011 collection of her eponymous line, titled “Psychedelic”. The dimly lit industrial space set a most mysterious mood while videos of brightly coloured dye floating in water projected onto the walls alluded to the theme of the collection. In the center of the room stood a loan bathtub surrounded by large bricks seeming more like a set fit for an art instillation rather then a fashion presentation. Guests milled around anxiously awaiting the collection as music from Notorious B.I.G. pumped from the speakers.
Models adorned in floor-skimming ensembles in punchy shades of indigo, grass green, magenta, and fuchsia walked slowly in pairs around the bathtub allowing guests to view each creation from head to toe. Leaving the short lengths behind this season Rowe focused on maxi dresses and skirts with an oversized, unstructured feel. The fresh bursts of colour and dreamy patterns were bang-on for the spirit of the season, but a greater variety in silhouettes would have made this grouping that much stronger.
