London Fashion Week seems to have cemented what we already knew; one of SS11’s key trends is giving one part of the face centre stage (from glittering acidic ice cream coloured eyes at Mary Katrantzou or it’s more glittery version at Giles, and now the lipstick factor at Saunders and Jaeger).
At Jaeger, make up artist Hannah Murray nodded to the seventies with her toffee coloured lips (though they actually used MAC Concealer in Caramel covered in lashings of gloss for a molten banoffee coloured toffee). Her instructions to fellow artists to turn up the volume on lips were clear; ‘keep the mouth rich, the pout thick and the colour toffee, not pink.’ All
this against a blush free, clean skin and shadow free eyes (just four layers of cloggy black mascara) gave lips all the attention they deserved. Nail artists followed suit painting fingers and toes an equally seventies shade of caramel in NailsInc, Cadogan Street to make lip colour pop. At Jonathan Saunders, Lucia Pieroni cherry picked the mouth too for a punch of scarlet using MAC’s Cherry Lip Pencil and Ruby Woo lipstick. Like an advert for that all American healthy girl, models sashayed down the runway with a forties prom girl pony and clean, gleaming skin (using Moisture Cover Concealer where needed and loose powder over the T-Zone to take down just enough but not too much gleam) and a very definite statement red lip;
very fitting for the hour glass shaped tailoring. The health factor was pumped up by MAC’s Vanilla Pigment on the cheek bones and that very modern no mascara open eyed effect
Pringle’s summer nude face was as understated, sophisticated and as cool as the collection. Charlotte Tilbury circled warm ochre powder shadow around mascara free eyes for a clean update on the nude smokey eye; like the collection itself this make-up was about showing both a woman’s practical side (with easy to wear colours) and feminine side (as shown by the
make-ups gleaming, gorgeous immaculate finish). Creamy cashmere summer skin gleamed while cheeks merely winked at a bronzer shade of blush to gently sculpt. Lips were kept clean and soft – blanked out by concealer and warmed back up gently pinky balm.
