Backstage Beauty: Big Hair and Crazy Nails at Lucian Matis

LGFW: Backstage Beauty at Lucian Matis

by

There was plenty of beauty eye candy on display at Lucian Matis’ fall 2011 show. You couldn’t miss the towering updos that Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS stylist Paul Pereira crafted. His team added tufted hair pieces to the models’ own hair, which was teased beyond belief (with the help of the volumizing Dust It Mattifying Powder) into sculptural and sometimes asymmetrical bouffants. While the front was all about lived-in volume, the back was controlled with an upswept woven braid going from the nape of the neck to the crown.

Smashbox artist Lori Taylor crafted a very wearable neutral face to go with the big hair message and highly embellished Matis collection. She layered on shades of earth-toned hues to create a diffused eye and contoured cheeks with the Smashbox Step-by-Step Contour Kit (out this spring). Lips were coated with two colours–a deep caramel on top and a lighter nude on the bottom to create a two-dimensional, yet soft look.
And can we talk about the nails? Manicurist Leeanne Colley of Toronto’s Tips Nail Bar (also known in beauty circles as the Nail Queen of Toronto) crafted three different nail looks for the show: a black nail layered with long black fringe; a black pointy tip covered in broken metal pieces and silver chains; and a golden nail bedazzled with crushed black gems. All the nail decor beautifully complemented the major embellishment (think: golden brocades, colourful gems and huge silver sequins) on Matis’ jackets, hose and shoes.
