While the crowd went wild for Toronto’s own Caitlin Power, it was Montreal’s Duy Nguyen of Duy who took home the top prize at last night’s Mercedes-Benz StartUp competition. Following rounds of presentations across Canada and critiques from some of fashion’s top insiders, eight young labels presented their Spring 2013 offering on the runway last night at Toronto Fashion Week. Lauren Bagliore, Pure Magnolia, Dreamboat Lucy, Nicole Campre, Christopher Bates, Malorie Urbanovitch and Caitlin Power were amongst the contenders at last night’s runway showdown.
Winner Duy showed a bright jet-set line inspired by the French Riviera, with a futuristic take. Mint-hued shorts with peplum detail, open knits in shocking red and a covetable denim vest were just some of the hits Nguyen showed on the catwalk. Great retail success is on the horizon for the Montreal Fashion Week regular who now follows in the footsteps of fellow design label Martin Lim, winner of the 2011 prize, who will be launching a collaboration with Canadian retail giant Reitmans next month.
