Winnipeg-bred designer Mark Fast wastes no time. Based in London, he’s quickly made an impact on the U.K. fashion scene. After studying at Central St. Martins, Fast launched his signature collection of spidery knits and body baring dresses in 2008. “The yarn itself is quiet figure-hugging. You can’t really drape lyrca,” he told me over tea. After only a few seasons, this Canadian King of Knits has spun up bundles of praise and an edgy following. Fast has It-Girls like Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Erin Wasson and Alice Dellal in a tizzy over his stretchy knitted wonders, speedily becoming our native land’s brightest fashion star. Quickening our pulse even further is Faster—the new diffusion line of key Mark Fast looks. Think cropped ballet tops, snug mini-skirts and provocative LBDs. The collection is less expensive than his main line, but offers a wonderful entry into the knit’n’purl world of Fast. Take his hole-detail tights. When Mark visited Toronto recently, I wore mine to meet the man himself. Due to frosted temperatures, it was only fit to sport the cutout tights with a sheer denier black pair underneath. Would my own little riff fair well with Mr. Fast? “This excites me,” he pointed at my gams. “Seeing you wear this and how you’ve styled it.” Nothing like being on the Mark.
