She's Got FLARE: Joëlle Paquette, Montreal

A model turned style scribe shares the word on her favourite labels and fashionable haunts

Fashion became the raison d’être for Paquette rather early on: when she was eight, she would reimagine the trends of the day into stage costumes for the Spice Girls, carefully drawing her creations in the sketchbook she kept perpetually tucked under one arm. After modelling for local designers in Montreal and completing a fashion portfolio program at London’s Central Saint Martins, she now writes for—including her own column, “Joëlle en série,” where she chronicles her retro-gamine adventures in style.

ON-SCREEN INSPO “A mix of Contempt and Breathless by Jean-Luc Godard; Brigitte Bardot meets Jean Seberg.”

CLOSET TREASURE “A simple cobalt-blue dress that I bought at & Other Stories in Milan last summer. It brings back great memories.”

DESIGNER CRUSHES “Proenza Schouler and Dries Van Noten. The sensibility and poetry behind their creations leave me breathless.”

LOCAL LABEL LOVE “Montreal-based Xavier Laruelle beautifully masters the art of minimalism.”

I’M ALWAYS ON THE HUNT FOR THE PERFECT… “Heels in which I can both work and dance.”

LIP SERVICE “My go-to look is flawless skin and a bold lip. To make it last, apply lip liner all over, then lipstick, then dust with translucent loose powder to set the colour. By the end of a meal, I’m always the only one with my lip colour intact.”

ACCESSORY LUST “Aãrk Collective watches. They’re a great example of how to reinvent a timeless object.”

IDEAL WEEKEND “I would start with a morning run on Mont-Royal, then reward myself with brunch on the terrace of Arts Café. Following that, I would head to Drawn & Quarterly and buy a superbly illustrated book.”
