I am not a lace kind of girl—EVER—so when the challenge to wear fall’s hottest material came my way, I shuddered but jumped in. My vision of lace was the bodysuits and leggings like Madonna wore in her Like a Virgin era, a far cry from Miuccia Prada’s interpretation for this season. While Miuccia has admitted her distaste for lace, she sent her models down the runway in head-to-toe guipure lace over flesh-coloured bodysuits—deliberately weird but, you know, it works. Typical Miuccia. I always feel slightly confused when I first see her collections but, on second glance, I gain more respect for the concept and the hidden background story she weaves throughout. No, Prada’s Fall ’08 collection was a far cry from Madge and her lace hair bow. See the Prada Collection
Simplicity of cut and contrasting elements are the keys to keeping lace modern. I love the idea of giving it a punk twist with leather leggings and chains, à la Givenchy, or keeping it chic by pairing it with a structured pant, like those at Yves Saint Laurent, and a strong piece of jewelry. It occurred to me how I have wronged lace all these years; it’s now a major player in my wardrobe. Well, at least for this season anyway.
