While Kate Middleton continues to make fashion waves with every sartorial selection she makes, it is her knack for wearing little-known designers that has the fashion world buzzing. For her latest public appearance, at the wedding of close friends Harry Aubrey-Fletcher and Louise Stourton, the princess-to-be donned a tailored black velvet coat by independent London fashion label Libelula (which means dragonfly in Spanish).
We know that the collection is fit for a princess, but just who is Libelula? Designer Sophie Cranston is at the helm of the label, which she established in 2002 after stints at Alexander McQueen and Alice Temperley. With designs that draw inspiration from everywhere from the Portobello market to the Spanish coast, the aesthetic is punctuated with an eclectic flair. It appears that Miss Middleton may be following in Michelle Obama’s fashionable footsteps by helping catapult young design talents onto the global stage. While the First Lady put American design stars like Jason Wu and Thakoon on our fashion radar, we are excited to see what burgeoning British talents Middleton will wear next.
