Nicolas Ghesquière shocked the fashion world when it was announced earlier this week that he would be leaving Balenciaga after 15 years with the fashion house. Since then the rumour mill has been full force with speculation as to what he will do following his end with the French label at the end of November.
With the reason for his leaving still a mystery, Karl Lagerfeld decided to weigh in on the topic during the Paris launch of his Little Black Jacket exhibition last night. The Chanel visionary revealed he thinks Ghesquière should start his own label, and that it would be a great idea for someone like Bernard Arnault to invest in it. This comes after Suzy Menkes reported in the New York Times that she had information from an anonymous source that Ghesquière had been offered a “house under his own name” by LVMH, overseen by one of Arnault’s children.
The whispers haven’t stopped there. A huge question is still on everyone’s mind: who will be Ghesquière’s successor? While Balenciaga CEO Isabelle Guichot stated the company would announce his replacement when they were ready, a list of names that includes Joseph Altuzarra, Alexander Wang, Natacha Ramsay, and Christopher Kane, has already emerged.
