John Galliano has been suspended by Dior after the designer allegedly shouted anti-Semitic remarks at a couple sitting at a streetside cafe in the Marais area of Paris. Galliano was arrested and reportedly had alcohol level just over the legal limit. He’s since been released and the couple has filed a complaint. Said Dior chief executive Sidney Toledano in a statement: “Dior affirms with the utmost conviction its policy of zero tolerance towards any antisemitic or racist words or behaviour.” The statement went on to say that Galliano had been suspended, pending the results of an inquiry.

The Dior Fall 2011 show is scheduled to walk at Paris Fashion Week on March 4, while the John Galliano show is slated for March 6. No word yet on whether or not these presentations will go ahead as planned.

UPDATE: A supposed eye-witness account has emerged of what went down last night at La Perle between Galliano and the couple. A source told Sleek Magazine that the drama that unfolded last night is in fact far less dramatic than that which is being widely circulated by the press.

According to the sources, the confrontation began when a couple in the bar did not recognize the celebrity designer—mistaking him for a bum—and then proceeded to insult him. The eyewitness recounted that the couple remarked to the designer, “You’re ugly, you’re disgusting, move away from here!” To which the designer allegedly responded, “You’re ugly and you’re fucking bag is ugly too,” at which point the man in the couple reportedly charged the designer with a chair. Though Galliano’s bodyguard tried to end the altercation peacefully, according to the report, the couple called the police and Galliano went willingly.
