Jeanne Beker aims to demystify the fashion world for young models-to-be with her new book Strutting It!: The Grit Behind The Glamour, which hits stores today.

Designed as a guide for teens who aspire to a career in modelling, the book is infused with Beker’s years of experience in the fashion industry, offering an insider’s look at what the life of a high-fashion model is really like (hint: it’s not always as glamorous as it seems).

The book lays out the basics for launching a modelling career, detailing what a girl should possess—both physically and mentally—to succeed in the highly competitive field. Beker also goes over what agents are looking for, how to protect yourself from common scams and the typical challenges faced by young models just starting out. And for those who don’t know the fashion world, Strutting It offers a crash course in the history of the industry’s big names, from Lisa Fonssagrives, who worked in the 1940s and ’50s, to contemporary success stories such as Agyness Deyn and Crystal Renn.

Beker also calls on her contacts in the industry—including top models Jessica Stam, Karolina Kurkova, Daria Werbowy and Coco Rocha, who writes the foreword—to offer advice. Veteran model Kristen McMenamy says of her career choice, “It’s still the best job in the world, if you can keep your head on your shoulders.”

And for those not blessed with statuesque height and a sample size figure, there’s still plenty to learn about this fast-paced, enigmatic profession.
