Other than TFI New Labels, which FLARE has been a proud sponsor of for years, there aren’t a lot of fashion prizes in this country supporting homegrown talent. So we’re beyond thrilled to share the news about the TML Fashion Design Challenge, a partnership between the Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards (CAFA), sporting goods specialist Mitchell & Ness and the Toronto Maple Leafs! Yes, you read that right, the Leafs, one of the OG Canadian hockey teams, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. To commemorate the milestone, Ontario-based designers are being tasked with creating a men’s or women’s capsule collection that uses the team’s new, v. retro-looking logo (see above) as inspiration. Five judges, including Much host Liz Trinnear, CAFA Stylist of the Year George Antonopoulos and yours truly, FLARE’s EIC, will select six finalists (three men’s and three women’s capsule designers), whose work will then be voted on by the hockey and fashion loving public between November 14 to 30. Besides contributing to the history of our country’s favourite sport and having their capsule produced and sold, there’s also the $25,000 prize (!), which is more money than you can shake a stick at.
The TML Fashion Design Challenge launches today and the final deadline for submissions is September 26, 2016. Click here for more information.
