Here at FLARE, we have a lot in common: a love of fashion, beauty, magazines, culture and general wordsmithery. But as we rush through each day, we don’t often find time to share the minutiae of our passions. What do we binge-watch on a rainy weekend? What are we longing for; what movies make us cry? So, in spirit of our Editors’ Picks column, we thought it was time the interns had some say. Introducing a new weekly column, Interns’ Picks, where you can get to know the people assisting the FLARE team—and maybe we can get to know one another a little better, too.

The Dutch design duo behind avant-garde accessory brand Vlieger & Vandam definitely do not shy away from creating controversial pieces. But, while I’ve been pondering the inclusion of a gun-embossed satchel or a crucifix-imprinted tote in my regular rotation of handbags; Rihanna, Fergie and Rumer Willis have already started sporting them around town. It also doesn’t hurt that MoMA added it to their permanent collection embracing Vandam’s inspiration behind the leatherware, namely society’s addiction to fear. For a slightly less provocative pick, the risqué look of the Guardian Angel Handcuffs Clutch in this season’s hot colour (oxblood) warrants a splurge—copy of 50 Shades of Grey not included!

Total eclipse of my heart! My love of great design and anything astronomy-related has left me mesmerized by these three lamps by design studio OS & OOS. Inspired by a syzygy, the alignment of three celestial bodies (the sun, the earth and the moon), these atmospheric lights double as kinetic sculptures; tinted glass discs rotate blocking the light to replicate solar and lunar eclipses. All three lamps are similar in shape and form, yet demonstrate a different aspect of a syzygy: transit, occultation and eclipse. Conceptually and aesthetically intriguing, these contemporary objects are sure to have a gravitational pull. Purchase one here.

After making the big leap into adulthood by moving away from home and living on my own for the first time, I’ve grown a huge affinity for home décor and buying unique items to spruce up my pad. Society6 is one of my favourite sites to find quality and one of a kind art prints—with an extensive archive of designs from a variety of independent artists, you can literally enter anything into the search engine and in seconds you will be blown away by the selection of prints available. I’ve had my eye on this Marc Jacobs portrait designed by Daniel Vasilescu for the longest time, the coloured speckles are absolutely breathtaking. A perfect piece for any fashion lover’s pad.
