She sings, acts, dances, models and isn’t one to hold anything back; she’s Grace Jones. For the past four decades, her unmistakeable look made her a muse and object of fascination for designers, photographers and artists alike. Born in Jamaica, Jones moved between Paris and New York, where her androgynous style, fearless personality and raw sex appeal made her a queen on the disco scene and quickly gave her a spot amongst the elite. She even caught the eye of Andy Warhol and became the subject of a series of portraits in the ’80s and modelled for Yves Saint Laurent and Kenzo.
Today, the 68-year-old Jones continues to catch the eye of designers and artists, like Riccardo Tisci, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Azzedine Alaïa, and her futuristic style has inspired a new generation of artists including FLARE cover stars Grimes and Lady Gaga, while her always-flawless flattop, elaborate headpieces (she’s particularly fond of Phillip Treacy), hooded scarves and angular padded tuxedo jackets have stood the test of time.
For the fashion bold out there, we’ve rounded out the must-haves items for a Grace Jones-inspired look.
