Today is World Goth Day, an annual celebration of all things dark, gloomy and mysterious. And the classic 1990s look, which was featured heavily on the fall 2014 runways, is experiencing another revival as of late thanks to Rihanna.
Riri uses the hastag #ghettogoth to describe this specific style, which she most recently wore at the iHeart Radio Awards earlier this month when she hit the red carpet in bantu knots, black lipstick and a sheer black lace dress by Givenchy—as well as enough diamond crucifixes to power a small prayer group.
Consider ghetto goth—a term that was apparently coined by NYC-based DJ Venus X (who knew?)—as a mashup of goth and hip hop; what would happen, say, if Jay-Z became eyeliner-sharing besties with The Cure’s Robert Smith.
Venus X is not a fan of Riri’s look, telling Fader magazine that ghetto goth isn’t just a fashion choice, it’s a political stance and a way of life: “We’re not flying around the world in private jets Instagramming glasses of champagne. That’s not quite ghetto goth.”
That said, we still think Riri looks ravishing, as per usual. Happy (?) Goth Day!
