Few things make us happier than seeing a homegrown designer hit it big. So when we found out Toronto-based Hayley Elsaesser created an amazing look for Miley Cyrus, we celebrated pretty hard.
“Miley’s people chose this outfit from three prints I developed, and we rushed to get it together, but we didn’t know what it was for,” says Elsaesser. “My husband was working at my store, and he got a call from NBC. And I was like, it couldn’t be NBC like the network? What is NBC? But it was someone from the wardrobe department, asking for permission to have my design on The Voice.”
Elsaesser has worked with celebrities like Katy Perry and Lilly Singh, but she says Cyrus is someone she was especially excited to design for. So when Cyrus’s stylist, Simone Harouche, reached out to Elsaesser to send outfits for the pop star to potentially wear, Elsaesser decided to take it to the next level and create brand new prints featuring Cyrus’ beloved pets.
“Bubba Sue, the pig was a really fun print to create, and I thought the plaid and the pig combo would be perfect for her because of her country beginnings,” says Elsaesser of the three-piece neoprene outfit. And clearly it did hit home because Cyrus and her team chose it for the promo pictures and a video for season 11 of The Voice—Cyrus’s first season as a full-time judge.
Although Elsaesser wouldn’t divulge any upcoming plans for what’s next for her and Cyrus, she’s hoping a few more of her pieces will make appearances throughout the season. A special first-look episode of season 11 airs tonight on NBC, and we’ll be tuning in to hopefully spot the judge wearing more killer Hayley looks.
