A funny thing happened when I was at London Fashion Week this season, more specifically, when I sat runway-side at Mulberry, clocking their big-ass spring ’17 bags. Despite possessing legit handles, the gargantuan satchels were hugged under one arm, a styling trick that was also clocked at Celine, Loewe, Marni, Proenza Schouler, Salvatore Ferragamo, Jil Sander and Sonia Rykiel.
A gimmick, you ask, like that “carefree” jacket over shoulders gesture that ruled catwalks and street style sidewalks alike seasons ago—despite the fact it was SO FRIGGING ANNOYING to actually wear one’s jacket like that? Not quite. It takes a certain type of bag to be scrunched and tucked in such a fashion, and the accessories tide is turning—from the structure of the top handle or the chain strap bag to something more, well, loho (luxe hobo, because inexpensive they are not).
Case in point: making its debut on the spring 2017 catwalk back in September, Salvatore Ferragamo launches its new model titled the “Soft Sofia” as part of its pre-spring collection on November 16. A squishier incarnation of its classic “Sofia,” a refined top handle satchel, the looser, more casual version was carried like a clutch on the catwalk, where models tucked them into armpits like they just didn’t care.
Made using a supple leather treated with a natural washing and tanning technique, this handbag’s naturally-occurring curves and dings are designed to be appreciated, which is great, when you live in the real world—especially one that includes car keys, ragged pinky nails and grasping your bag like it’s your lunch loot when you race out the door (ahem).
