With the summer season kicking into high gear, sole-savvy fashionistas everywhere are clamouring for the latest and greatest “it” shoe. With that in mind, FLARE’s Fashion interns make their picks for the season’s must-have sandal.

Whether it’s an of-the-moment piece you’re after, or a more modest, comfy flat, the versatility of black leather footwear makes it a favourite seasons over. “Lately I’ve been making a concerted effort to break away from my usual black-on-black routine – but clearly some old habits die hard,” says Hilary George-Parkin who picked a metal plated number from Surface to Air. The rocker-chic appeal of the Acne Maya and Jeffrey Campbell Clinic Wedges caught the eyes of Cindy Lemus and Row Lantano who were drawn to the “architectural elements” and “alternative edge”. Both had minimalist styling in mind, opting to pair it with camel colored trousers or leather shorts, a button up and a bright red lip for pop of colour.

In keeping with the season’s clog fever is Melissa Tran’s choice, a Closed-Toe Clog Sandle from Rachel Comey. “I would wear them with basically anything in my wardrobe,” says Tran, “a pair of silk shorts or my favourite wide leg denims, and coloured tights for cooler days”. Ryan Cheung was drawn to the “juxtaposition between neutrality and drama” from Burberry’s nude platform sandal with “the soft knotted leather wrap against the staggering 5-inch heel”. His style tip: pair them with a fine knit ankle socks for a touch of the unexpected. Both Lindsey Mather and Mary D’Cruz opted for a splash a colour – for Mather, a cerulean blue croc-print flat from Tapeet; and D’Cruz, Giusseppe Zanotti’s ultra bling “Brasil Embellished Leather Sandal” perfect for those who gravitate “towards the wild and colourful rather than every shade of black.”
