As the temperature rises and your summer wardrobe lightens up, you might be tempted to wear your favourite weekend shorts to the office, like @VictoryFlower who tweeted us: Any tips on making shorts workplace appropriate? It’s just TOO hot here in Winnipeg for dress pants!
Shorts are certainly a tricky style to wear at work especially if you don’t work outdoors or in a creative environment. First, check to see what the dress code is before you start shopping. If shorts are in, your best bet for the office is to look for tailored styles in dressier materials such as wool or silk, and cuts that are streamlined but not too tight. Avoid denim, bright colours, and low-rise cuts. More office appropriate styles include bermuda shorts, which hit just above the knee, and wide pleated shorts that can almost pass as skirts.
Also consider what to wear with your shorts when you’re headed to the workplace. Tailored blazers are always a great option to dress up your look–perhaps even a short-suit, a la Carven and Chloe. Sharp-looking flats such as leather sandals or brogues are more appropriate with many shorts styles than high heels.
